Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private plans. You can get it as a stand-alone plan alongside Original Medicare, or built into a Medicare Advantage plan.

The key to Part D is the formulary — the list of drugs a plan covers and how it prices them. The same medication can cost very different amounts from one plan to the next.

How coverage is structured

Part D plans have a formulary organized into tiers, plus a deductible and copays. Reviewing your specific medications against each plan's formulary is the only way to find the lowest real cost.

Pharmacies matter

Plans have preferred pharmacy networks, and using a preferred pharmacy can lower your copays. We factor in where you fill prescriptions.

Reviewing every year

Formularies and pharmacy networks change annually, so the best plan last year may not be the best this year. An annual review can save real money.
