Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement insurance — also called Medigap — works alongside Original Medicare to help pay the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Medicare leaves to you. It's sold by private companies and standardized into lettered plans.

Supplements trade a monthly premium for predictable costs and broad provider flexibility — you can typically see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no network.

How it works

You keep Original Medicare and add a Supplement plan that fills in the gaps. Because plans are standardized by letter, a Plan G from one company covers the same things as a Plan G from another — the difference is price and service.

Who it often fits

People who value predictable out-of-pocket costs, want freedom to use any Medicare doctor, or travel often and don't want to worry about networks.

What to know about drugs

Supplements don't include prescription coverage, so you'll usually add a stand-alone Part D plan. We help you pair them.
